First Lesson

Psalm 118:14-29
My strength and song is the Lord, and he has become salvation for me. 15 Loud shouts of victory are heard in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord has done a mighty deed! 16 The right hand of the Lord is lifted high! The right hand of the Lord has done a mighty deed!” 17 I will not die. No, I will live, and I will proclaim the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not handed me over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of righteousness. I will enter them. I will give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate to the Lord. The righteous enter it. 21 I will give you thanks, because you answered me, and you have become salvation for me. 22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 This is from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 O Lord, please save us now. O Lord, grant us success. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God, and he makes light shine on us. Bind the festival with branches as far as the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks. You are my God, and I will exalt you. 29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

Second Lesson

Revelation 3:7-13
To the messenger of the church in Philadelphia write: The Holy One, the one who is true, the one who has the key of David, the one who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one can open, says this: 8 I know your works. Look, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 Look, I will make those who are from the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not but are lying—look, I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and make them realize that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will also keep you from the hour of testing, which is about to come over the whole inhabited world, to test those who dwell on the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have so that no one takes your crown. 12 The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will never leave it again. I will also write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God—the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God—and my new name. 13 Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Gospel Lesson

Matthew 19:16-30
There was a man who came to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing should I do that I may have eternal life?” 17 Jesus said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? Only one is good. But if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” the man asked him. Jesus said, “ ‘You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. 19 Honor your father and mother.’ And, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” 20 The young man said to him, “I have kept all these. What am I still lacking?” 21 Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had many possessions. 23 Jesus said to his disciples, “Amen I tell you: It will be very hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you: It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, “Who then can be saved?” 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Then Peter answered, “Look, we have left everything and followed you! What then will we have?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Amen I tell you: In the renewal, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 Everyone who has left homes or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, because of my name, will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 Many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.”
